Martin is a 3ie Senior Research Fellow with over 20 years of research and work experience in climate and international development.
He started his career at the Overseas Development Institute, London, before working at the University of Antwerp, Belgium, where he developed a stream of work on climate finance. He subsequently took academic positions in Denmark and Sweden before working at the University of Manchester, UK.
Martin’s work focuses on climate, agricultural development and value chains with a focus on sub-Saharan Africa. He is a keen advocate of iterating research methods and applying theory-based evaluation techniques.
Most recently, Martin worked in the Independent Evaluation Unit of the Green Climate Fund, South Korea. He led the Green Climate Fund’s evidence review workstream, completed impact evaluations and convened the Fund’s seminar series. He led a number of corporate evaluations including on the Fund’s Policy on the Protection of Whistleblowers and Witnesses.
Martin has published widely in environmental and international development journals. He has edited four Special Issues and serves as an editor for the European Journal of Development Research. Martin holds a BA (Hons) in Human Geography from the University of Sussex and an MA (Econ) and Ph.D. in international development from the University of Manchester, UK.
