Process evaluation is “a study which aims to understand the functioning of an intervention by examining implementation, mechanisms of impact, and contextual factors” (MRC Population Health Science Research Network 2014). This presentation will describe why it is necessary to conduct process evaluations alongside randomised controlled trials of complex interventions and review published guidelines on how to plan, design and conduct process evaluations. Examples of several process evaluation studies will be discussed, with an emphasis on the development of a process evaluation of Sinovuyo Teen, a parenting support programme in rural Eastern Cape, South Africa.
