Our gap maps are thematic collections of existing evidence from impact evaluations and systematic reviews about effects of international development policies and programmes. The reports provide all of the supporting documentation, including the background information, methods and results, protocols, and analysis of what the map results mean.

Strengthening good governance in low- and middle-income countries

Evidence gap map 3ie 2023

The authors systematically identified, mapped, and summarized the evidence base of interventions that aim to strengthen good governance through governance effectiveness. The evidence gap map contains 19 systematic reviews and 485 impact evaluations. The characteristics of the evidence are described and mapped according to a framework of 20 interventions and 28 outcomes. This map was commissioned by USAID’s Center for Democracy, Human Rights and Governance.

Political competition through elections

The authors of this study identified, mapped, and summarized the evidence base for interventions that seek to enhance political competition through elections. The evidence gap map this report is based on includes 188 impact evaluations, four qualitative evaluations, and two systematic reviews. Studies were found for 57 nations, mainly evaluating national-level, public institution-implemented interventions that targeted all people and voters in electoral democracy situations. This map was commissioned by USAID's Center for Democracy, Human Rights and Governance.

The effects of human rights interventions on rights-related outcomes

The authors of this report systematically identified, mapped, and described the evidence base of interventions that aim to strengthen human rights. The characteristics of the evidence are described and mapped according to a framework of 23 interventions and 28 outcomes. This evidence gap map (EGM) includes 377 impact evaluations and 46 systematic reviews. The map was commissioned by USAID’s Center for Democracy, Human Rights and Governance.
