Introduction to the 'Women-led Collective Enterprises' Track

While women’s collectives have supported recovery from the pandemic, more needs to be done to support their own strength and resilience. Collective enterprises have been identified as an important pathway to progress, but what helps collective enterprises thrive? This track, curated by 3ie and LEAD at Krea University, will focus on strengthening women’s collective enterprises in diverse sectors as a response to the disproportionate impact the pandemic has had on women as workers and entrepreneurs. Given their potential as engines of economic development as well as women’s empowerment, it is important to see how carefully chosen combinations of complementary interventions working with women’s collective enterprises to turn them into ‘women’s empowerment collectives’ can help overcome societal and structural barriers for them to survive, sustain, thrive and scale. Another aspect to investigate is the opportunities that external partnerships offer to collective enterprises and the barriers they must overcome to leverage government and non-government partnerships.

Session 1: Building a solutions toolbox for women’s collective enterprises

To kickstart the session, we will present the theory of change for 3ie’s Swashakt programme. The framework links interventions for strengthening collective enterprises with their impact on women’s empowerment and highlights what we know and what we need to know about this linkage. The presentation will also cover the different ways in which Swashakt projects are supporting collective enterprises. This will be followed by a discussion, where panelists will be expected to draw on their experiences in working with women’s collective enterprises.
