3ie at Livelihoods India Summit 2020
3ie organised two panels at the Livelihoods India Summit 2020, held online from 28-29 January 2021. The summit brings together diverse stakeholders on a single platform to discuss critical issues that impede and afflict the livelihoods of the poor. 3ie is a technical partner and is supporting a thematic track on enhancing women’s economic empowerment.
Technical session 3.2: Enhancing impact through linkages: what next for NRLM?

Many approaches are being taken under the DAY-NRLM programme to enhance livelihoods promotion, access to finance and scale up existing initiatives. While one of NRLM’s key successes has been improving financial inclusion, and 3ie has results that show this, the existing institutions and mechanisms can be leveraged to do more to promote livelihoods and empower women. Convergence with panchayati raj and other programmes is one such means.
In this session, 3ie will share some key highlights from an impact evaluation of the large-scale NRLP in nine states of India. These will set the tone for a moderated discussion for the way forward for the NRLM program, with a specific focus on the experiences with and potential of convergence with other major social sector schemes. Panelists will include representatives from the national government, state rural livelihoods missions, and 3ie’s evaluation partners.

Plenary Session 2: Empowering women in rural India: what have we learned?

In this session, 3ie will initiate the discussion by presenting the findings relating to women’s empowerment, both within and outside the household, and its impact on household outcomes. The panellists will reflect on the findings and draw upon their own work to explore the evidence on women’s empowerment efforts in rural India. The session will make the knowledge base on this question accessible, highlighting high potential interventions and those that are now known not to work. Participants will have the opportunity to engage with this research and raise questions to the expert panel.
