Mass irregular migration is a pressing global issue, especially for low- and middle-income countries. In 2018, there were over 100 million irregular migrants estimated worldwide (Yayboke and Gallego 2019) and the number continues to increase as more individuals seek better lives, conditions, or livelihoods, or escape from violence, persecution, or repression.

Wars, droughts, floods and other effects of climate change are leading to pervasive and complex emergencies globally, causing displacement, famine and crop failure, among many other adversities. As several of these events occur in tandem, there is a need to have a multi-dimensional understanding of how things such as climate change, conflict and intersectional identities intertwine. One of the key pillars to mitigate their impacts is resilience — as highlighted by the ongoing 27th Conference of Parties (COP27) in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt — and in this blog, we share how some of 3ie’s ongoing work will help inform future policy on how people, communities and institutions can better prepare and respond to shocks in the future.

In November 2021, the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) in Glasgow proposed ambitious goals to keep global warming to 1.5 degrees C, reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 45 percent by 2030 compared to 2010 levels, and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. Energy consumption is the largest source of global GHG emissions, and energy efficiency has great potential to reduce energy demand and use.
