Agricultural input subsidies for improving productivity, farm income, consumer welfare and wider growth in low- and middle-income countries: A systematic review

This systematic review by Hemming and colleagues examined the effectiveness of agricultural input subsidies. They found that input subsidies improve adoption of inputs, yields and farm income, as well as lead to changes in staple food prices, labour demand, agricultural wages, and GDP. The review indicates the importance of programme implementation and wider contextual factors. The authors conclude there are generally positive effects of input subsidies, but there is limited evidence on poverty effects or evidence outside of Sub-Saharan Africa.
