Transforming rural livelihoods in India: Findings from NRETP and NRLM evaluation
Impact Evaluation Brief, 2026
This brief is based on 3ie's study evaluating the impacts of India's National Rural Livelihoods Mission (NRLM), including its enhanced phase under the National Rural Economic Transformation Project (NRETP). NRLM is one of the largest government-led efforts globally to reduce rural poverty through women-led self-help groups (SHGs) and community institutions. In the brief, we summarize the key findings and policy implications of the impact evaluation, which provides robust evidence on the program's effects, drawing on data from around 23,000 households across nine states. The evaluation was conducted in collaboration with the Ministry of Rural Development (MoRD), India, the Gates Foundation, and the World Bank. To know more, click here.
