Evaluating the impact of community health worker integration into prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV services in Tanzania

This impact evaluation of a pilot programme implemented by Amref Health Africa in Shinyanga Region examined whether community health workers can enhance retention in prevention of mother-to-child transmission services, including retention in HIV care and adherence to antiretroviral therapy.

Study findings demonstrate that compared to control sites, there were improvements over time in treatment sites in the timing of antiretroviral therapy initiation, retention in care, and medication possession ratio, though results were not statistically significant.
