Our recent publication ‘Incorporating process evaluation into impact evaluation – What, why and how’ by 3ie Senior Research Fellows Vibecke Dixon and Michael Bamberger lays down the guidelines that can provide impact evaluators with tools and ideas for exploring and adding relevant elements of process evaluations to experimental and quasi-experimental impact evaluation designs. In this two-part blog series based on the guidelines, Bamberger discusses different process evaluation approaches, the benefits of using process evaluation, and offers a design framework that can be adapted to each project context.
WHO’s Immunization Agenda 2030 sets the target of halving the number of zero-dose children (who did not get the DTP shot) to 7 million by 2030. This World Immunization Week, we bring you evidence on what works to increase immunization rates in L&MICs and to improve health workers’ performance. We also highlight how evidence is prompting actors in India and Nigeria, two of the six countries with the largest share of zero-dose children, to innovate towards increasing immunizations.
Leveraging evidence to improve child immunization in Haryana, India
Informed by evaluation findings, the state government partnered with researchers to pilot an intervention that uses community-nominated information ambassadors as a cost-effective way to improve timely immunization.
Increasing immunization rates by engaging community leaders
In Kebbi state, Nigeria, health authorities are enlisting religious leaders, traditional authorities, and traditional birth attendants to encourage families to complete their children's vaccination cycles. A 3ie formative evaluation conducted in the state informed these moves.

Strengthening systems for Transparent, Reproducible, and Ethical Evidence (TREE) 3 June 2022, 6:00-7:30 am PT
We want evaluations to produce credible and unbiased evidence—which is meaningful for decision-makers—while maintaining the highest ethical standards. The speakers will present 3ie’s Transparent, Reproducible, and Ethical Evidence (TREE) Review Framework and provide key takeaways, perspectives and lessons learnt from the field as part of the pilots that tested the Framework in India and Cameroon. There will also be a Q&A session focused on how processes and tools such as this Framework may strengthen their own systems for ethical conduct and oversight of evaluation.

One year ago, a group of experts on a 3ie panel agreed that simply producing evidence and data was not sufficient for learning. On 8 April 2022, 3ie executive director Marie Gaarder invited those experts back to her virtual table to share what they’ve learned about how to set up processes within development institutions so that good evidence is not just generated but incorporated into the project planning cycle.
